Description

The Woodley Tunnel's north portal, located on the Peak Forest Canal, was constructed between 1794 and 1801, with 20th-century alterations. Engineers Benjamin Outram and Thomas Brown designed it. The structure is made of coursed millstone grit, featuring an ashlar band, coping, and voussoirs. It has an almost round-headed arch with a slight skew. There is a cobbled access leading up to Hyde Road at the north portal. Inside, the tunnel vault has been rendered with 20th-century cement, and the original cobbled towpath has been replaced with concrete and steel rails. The tunnel runs beneath Hyde Road, which required concrete embanking and buttressing next to the portal. This tunnel is one of three original tunnels on the Peak Forest Canal and measures 176 yards in length. The south portal is listed separately.
