Description
Meadow Mill, built in the 1870s, is a substantial industrial building of group value. The front elevation rises seven storeys, including a basement. It is constructed primarily of red brick, with the basement in blue brick below a stone band. The first and second floors feature arcaded facades with blue brick bands marking the impost levels. The building has 41 bays. The top floor incorporates paired windows with round arched heads and column mullions, topped by a stone band. Above this storey is a stone parapet and a brick arcaded bracket cornice. The central four bays have stone window dressings, with the outer two slightly projecting. The third floor incorporates a round window and a round-arched arcade with a keystone. The first and second floor arcades are round-headed and stone, featuring carved capitals. The upper two floors have a single window in a stone surround. A carved panel sits between the storeys. The central section terminates in two turrets adorned with ornamental iron ridge details and a flagpole. A tall, single-storey wing extends to the rear, along with a factory chimney. A one-storey gatehouse is also present. The interior features a structure of cast-iron lengthwise and crosswise beams supported by brick arches. The mill represents a good example of industrial architecture from its period.
