Description

Portwood Bridge is a public road bridge over the River Mersey, dating from the late 18th century or early 19th century. It is constructed from large dressed sandstone blocks and features two semi-elliptical arches with plain voussoirs that alternate in height. These arches spring from a central pier that has triangular cutwaters on both the upstream and downstream sides. The bridge includes a plain central pilaster and terminal pilasters, a plain band, and a flat deck that is protected by parapets made of massive rectangular blocks with ridged coping.

On the south-west corner, there is a short return that incorporates a blocked semi-circular arch. The deck is paved with granite setts. Embedded in the inner face of the west parapet is a tapered cast-iron post with a rounded top, which has a horizontal band inscribed with "1332" and vertical inscriptions reading "MANOR" above the band and "BARONY/STOCKPORT" below. The history of the bridge is not well-documented, but it is likely that it was built by a private agency rather than a turnpike trust.
