Description

The following building shall be added:

SJ8990 STOCKPORT KING STREET EAST

701-0/0/10001 Portwood Bridge II

Public Road Bridge over River Mersey. Late C18 or early C19. Large dressed sandstone blocks. Two semi-elliptical arches with plain voussoirs alternately raised, springing from a central pier with triangular cutwaters both up and down stream; plain central pilaster and terminal pilasters, plain band, flat deck protected by parapets of massive rectangular blocks with ridged coping. South-west corner has short return incorporating a blocked semi-circular arch. Granite set paving to deck. Built into the centre of the inner face of the west parapet is a tapered cast-iron post with a rounded top, a horizontal band inscribed "1332", and vertical inscriptions "MANOR" above the band and "BARONY/STOCKPORT" below. HISTORY: not known, but probably built by a private agency rather than (e.g.) a turnpike trust.
