Description
The War Memorial at the Church of St Paul the Apostle is a First World War memorial that was unveiled in 1921 and rebuilt and relocated in 2008. It is made of sandstone and stands in the churchyard of St Paul the Apostle, which is also a Grade II-listed building, to the west of the church.
The memorial features a stone floriated cross head on a tapering octagonal shaft. This cross shaft rises from an octagonal plinth with a moulded foot, which is set on a two-stepped base, with the lower step being square.
On the south-east face of the plinth, there is an incised inscription that reads: "TO THE GLORY/ OF GOD/ AND IN/ HONOURED MEMORY/ OF OUR GALLANT DEAD/ WHO FELL IN THE/ GREAT WAR/ 1914 – 1918/ THEIR NAME LIVETH/ FOR EVERMORE." The names of 100 individuals who fell in the First World War are recorded on the other faces of the plinth, listed alphabetically without ranks. Additionally, the north-west face of the plinth includes a dedication to a member of the church who contributed to the restoration of the memorial in 2008.
