Description

Joule House is a group of three houses, dating from the early 19th century, located on The Crescent in Salford. The buildings are constructed of brick with Welsh slate roofs and are now used as offices. They stand three storeys tall, with an eight-window range facing The Crescent and a four-window range on the return elevation to Acton Square, which includes a lower wing.

The elevation to The Crescent features two symmetrically designed units with an advanced central block of four bays, where the entrances are located in the outer bays. Each entrance has an eight-panelled door set within projecting Ionic doorcases. The windows are 12-pane sash types, all with flat-arched gauged brick heads, and there is a continuous sill-band at the first floor level. The design includes a plain eaves cornice and angle pilasters, along with end wall and axial stacks.

The return elevation to No.1 Acton Square has a four-window range with an advanced central bay that features a doorway in a projecting Ionic porch to the left of centre. This elevation also has 12-pane sash windows with flat-arched gauged brick heads and a sill-band at the first floor. An end wall stack is present as well.

Joule House is notable for its historical connection to James Prescott Joule, a scientist born in Salford in 1818, who lived and worked in the house. The interior has not been inspected.
