Description

The Church of St John the Evangelist is a church built in 1842, with a chancel added in 1854 and a baptistry in 1882. It is constructed of rock-faced stone and features a slate roof. The church has a nave and chancel, a west tower, and porches on the north and south sides, designed in a Neo-Romanesque style. The 6-bay nave has a projecting plinth, shallow buttresses, and a coped parapet above a corbel table. Each bay contains a tall round-arched window with a hoodmould. The south porch is castellated, while the north porch has a coped gable. At both ends of the nave, square piers with nook shafts and pyramidal caps rise above the parapet. The chancel features a 3-light east window. The 3-stage tower has shallow angled buttresses, a round-arched door, clock faces in a foiled surround, and a belfry stage with nook shafts, featuring five tall round-arched openings on each side and a shallow distinctive pyramidal roof supported by bold brackets. Next to the tower is the semi-circular baptistry topped with a conical roof. Inside, the Romanesque detailing continues, with alternating king and queen-post roof trusses that have diagonally braced tie beams. The chancel arch is enriched with chevron patterns, and the chancel ceiling is painted. Timber fittings include pews, stalls, a pulpit, and a west gallery that rests on barleysugar-twist cast-iron columns with cushion capitals. There is also a stone font and stained glass windows.
