Description

Buile Hill is a mansion, now serving as the Salford Mining Museum, built between 1825 and 1827 by Sir Charles Barry. An upper storey and porte-cochere were added around 1860 by Walters. The building is constructed of ashlar stone and features a hipped Welsh slate roof with a central open pavilion adorned with a stone balustrade, showcasing a restrained classical style.

The exterior consists of three storeys with shallow projecting two-window wings on either side of the entrance block, which includes the porte-cochere. To the right, there is a further recessed two-window wing, and a single-storey wing that originally housed a billiard room is advanced to the right. The porte-cochere is supported by two fluted Doric columns that carry an entablature with a triglyph frieze. Above the entrance, there are tripartite windows divided by plain pilasters. The building features two-pane sash windows throughout, with their sills forming a continuous band.

The garden front mirrors the main facade, with a recessed entrance block and a doorway framed by a plain Doric architrave, creating a porch between the slightly advanced wings. The wings have shallow squared bay windows on the ground floor, with plain pilasters forming tripartite windows and balustraded parapets. Tripartite windows are present throughout this elevation. The building has an end wall stack, a front wall stack in the right-hand wing, and additional stacks concealed within the central roof pavilion.

Inside, the planning is obscured by museum displays, but a cantilevered stone staircase with cast-iron balustrading is retained in the right-hand bay.
