Description
The Environmental Institute, formerly known as St. Augustine's School, is a building dating from around 1874, designed by G. F. Bodley for Edward Stanley Heywood. It is constructed of brick with stone dressings and has a clay tile roof. The building features a long hall with eight bays, which includes a 20th-century mezzanine floor. It is designed in a Free Gothic style.
The first and eighth bays project as gabled wings, each featuring two 2-light mullion and transom windows beneath a carved stone panel, with coped gables that have kneelers. The other bays are supported by weathered and gableted buttresses and have two 3-light mullion and transom windows under a continuous hoodmould. The steep roof is adorned with a row of 20th-century rooflights and an elegant cupola bell-cote. The gable ends have mullion and transom windows flanking a central buttress.
An arched door on the left side has a moulded stone surround and cusped panelling above. At the rear, there is a wall that encloses a yard, and the rear elevation is treated similarly to the front. The interior has been significantly altered to accommodate its conversion into offices.
