Description
The synagogue, dated 1928-29, is constructed with white ashlar facing and pink brick featuring stone dressings on the sides and rear. It has a hipped Welsh slate roof topped with a central lantern and is designed in a modern Neo-classical style. The main part of the synagogue is located to the east, with the Ark facing Old Bury Road and the entrance on the southeast elevation. To the west, there is a lower block that contains offices, a hall, and a staircase.
The exterior of the synagogue is expressed as two storeys, with the southeast elevation featuring five bays, a high rusticated plinth, and stripped down Corinthian pilasters. The facade is further enhanced by full-height moulded panels around the windows, which are round-arched on the upper storey. A simply detailed cornice runs above. The entrance is located in a projecting bay to the left, with paired doors beneath an entablature supported by console brackets. The opposing elevation is similarly arranged but is plainer, made of pink brick with stone dressings and lacking decorative details.
The elevation facing Bury Old Road has an advanced central bay, from which the segmentally planned and domed Ark projects. Above the Ark is a tripartite window with an entablature, and there are windows with entablatures above on either side. The cornice of the Ark features lions' head decorations. On either side of the central bay, lower domed blocks contain entrances in the side elevations, with plain, narrow tripartite windows above. The hall and office range to the west is constructed of pink brick with stone dressings, featuring paired doors next to the main entrance and a recessed central bay on the southwest elevation flanked by tripartite windows that light the stairway, with the central light being segmentally arched at both the top and bottom.
Inside, the main body of the synagogue retains its original fittings, including oak seating on the ground floor and galleries on three sides, a marble Bimah with copper rails and light fittings, a marble dais with copper rails, and curved sliding doors leading to the Ark.
