Description
The Church of St Matthew with St Mary is a church built between 1908 and 1910 by architect Isaac Taylor. It is constructed from rock-faced ashlar with ashlar dressings on the exterior and buff brick with ashlar dressings on the interior, showcasing a Late Perpendicular style. The church comprises a short chancel, chancel transepts, a north vestry, a nave with aisles, a west baptistery and entrance, and a north-west tower.
The chancel features a five-light east window and a lancet window on either side, with another lancet in the canted corner connecting it to the transepts. The south transept gable has a three-light window, while the north transept has a mandela window above the projecting vestry. The clerestory windows are arranged in three- and four-light configurations with cusped lights under Tudor arches, and the aisle windows are two- and three-light. The west end includes a three-light window with a cusped lancet on either side at a lower level above the projecting baptistery, which has a small central cusped window, a two-light window to the left, and a door to the right. The tower features angle buttresses with set-offs, paired two-light louvred openings at the top stage, and smaller windows below. A polygonal stair turret rises next to the baptistery to the second stage, with the entrance located on the north side.
Inside, the chancel and nave are combined, featuring a tie beam truss roof with short queen posts and arched braces, as well as cranked collars connecting the two tiers of purlins. The nave arcades consist of two-centred arches on octagonal piers. An unusual arch arrangement at the east end of the chancel leads into the sanctuary, with windows in the canted corners and additional windows illuminating the sanctuary from the sides. The church contains richly patterned Renaissance-style stained glass in the chancel, transepts, west wall, and baptistery windows. It also features a fine set of choir stalls and pews, with panelling in the chancel and baptistery. This church is a well-designed example of its period, notable for its rich and nearly complete fittings, particularly the unique design of the chancel.
