Description
Rochdale Canal Lock Number 50, known as Moss Lower Lock, was built between 1794 and 1804 and designed by engineer William Jessop. The lock is constructed from dressed stone and was originally designed to accommodate two sets of lower gates for two lengths of boat; the recesses for these gates remain, although only the lower gates were ever fitted. At some point, the lock was heightened by two courses. The mouth features a cast iron lipping. While the lock gates have been completely overhauled, the winding gear is currently not in place.
