Description
Halfpenny Bridge is a footbridge built in 1831, made of wrought and cast iron, stone, and brick. It features a shallow segmental riveted girder that supports another girder forming the road level. The parapet consists of sturdy cast iron railings with crested lattice panels. At the west end, there are three fluted column cast iron posts at the top of a flight of stone steps, which have thick rusticated side walls. The road bed is paved with York stone and continues into a cobbled path at the east end. This bridge formerly crossed the Rochdale Canal Branch Arm and is particularly notable as a rare surviving toll bridge over a canal. A plaque commemorates its restoration in 1978.
