Description

This is an early 19th century house and former domestic workshop, with alterations to the ground floor made in the late 19th century to create a shop. The building is rectangular and has a canted front elevation facing Pickup Street.

It is constructed of coursed, squared masonry with ashlar stone dressings. The symmetrical front elevation projects forward from neighbouring buildings and stands above the pavement on Milnrow Road. The front is characterized by a plinth, alternating quoins, a projecting eaves course with a moulded stone gutter, and watershot masonry where the upper edges of the blocks are slightly tilted outwards. The ground floor has a central doorway flanked by shop windows. The doorway has a timber surround with a projecting moulded canopy, supported by two circular iron bosses. The original board door is recessed within the doorframe, accessed by two stone steps. The large shop windows are currently boarded up, though the original timber shop fronts, including pilasters, consoles, fascia and cornice, remain. The first floor has three rectangular windows with stone surrounds, the central one now bricked up, with the outer windows now fitted with three-light timber casements. The second floor has a ten-light stone-mullioned workshop window, whose lintel forms part of the projecting eaves course.

The west gable wall is partially obscured by an adjoining building, and is constructed of coursed masonry with a plinth and quoins. A vertical rectangular taking-in door or window is present on the second floor, and is now bricked up. The east end wall angles to follow the bend in Pickup Street, with quoins to the left-hand corner. A small window has been inserted on the second floor, and a blocked-up doorway with timber lintel is located to the right. The first and second floors each have a wide rectangular window with Timber lintel and four-light timber casements.

The rear (north) elevation has been heavily altered, possibly in connection with former attached buildings. It is built of roughly-coursed rubblestone. An inserted doorway with a cement frame and external metal staircase is on the first floor, and a series of blocked window openings are present on the first and second floors. Two modern square windows have been inserted on the second floor.

The interior of the building has not been inspected.
