Description
Rochdale Canal Lock Number 49, also known as Moss Upper Lock, was built between 1794 and 1804 by engineer William Jessop. This lock is constructed from dressed stone and was designed to accommodate two sets of lower gates, although only the lower gates were ever installed. The recesses for the gates remain visible. The mouth of the lock features grooves for stop planks, and winding gear is still present on one side. The top of the retaining walls has a rounded edge, and the stonework between the lower two gates has finely worked margins. The gates have been completely overhauled.
