Description

Saint Marys Church of England School is a school building constructed in 1866 by architects J. M. and H. Taylor. It is made of coursed rubble with ashlar dressings and features a slate roof. The central hall is accessed through a porch, which is flanked by cross-wings; the left wing projects slightly while the right wing projects significantly and includes appendages on either side. The entrance porch has a flat balustraded roof and two semi-circular headed openings, highlighted by a small gable on the hall roof behind it and an elaborate bellcote on the ridge of the roof. The window openings, designed in an Early English style, consist of 2, 3, and 4 lights, with circular windows located in the gables of the cross-wings. The steeply pitched roof, adorned with a crested ridge, several gables, and numerous gabled dormer windows, contributes significantly to the balanced asymmetrical design of the building. The school was designed to complement the nearby church.
