Description
This is a row of four houses located at 1, 2, 3, and 4 Middle Newgate, built in the early 19th century. The houses are constructed from hammer-dressed watershot stone and feature a graduated stone slate roof. Each house is one bay wide and has two storeys.
Houses 3 and 4 were built slightly earlier and have doors on the right with square-cut surrounds. They feature five-light windows on both the ground and first floors, although the first-floor windows were originally seven-light with chamfered mullions. Houses 1 and 2 also have doors on the right, but they have three-light windows on the ground floor and three-light windows on the first floor, which were originally five-light, with flat-faced stone mullions.
The row has four ridge chimney stacks. The rear of the houses has similar windows, along with a small lean-to addition and some 20th-century window openings. The right gable has been rendered following the demolition of part of the row.
