Description

The drinking fountain at Hare Hill Park was built in 1902 and is made from local gritstone and pink and grey polished granite. It measures approximately 2 metres square at the base and stands 3 metres high. Designed in a style reminiscent of a medieval shrine or preaching cross, it features a combination of Gothic and Classical elements. The base consists of two steps leading up to a two-stage plinth made of pink polished granite. On the west and east sides, there are polished grey granite bowls, and the square shaft has segmental-arched recesses with taps on two sides. The north and south sides display inscriptions.

The inscription on the south face reads: "THE THREE GREAT FORCES FOR THE IMPROVEMENT OF MANKIND ARE RELIGION, TEMPERANCE AND CO-OPERATION, AND AS A COMMERCIAL FORCE SUPPORTED AND SUSTAINED BY THE OTHER TWO CO-OPERATION IS THE GRANDEST, NOBLEST, AND THE MOST LIKELY TO BE SUCCESSFUL IN THE REDEMPTION OF THE INDUSTRIAL CLASSES. FROM J.- MITCHELL'S INAUGURAL ADDRESS CO-OPERATIVE CONGRESS ROCHDALE. 1892." The north face inscription states: "ERECTED BY THE LITTLEBOROUGH CO-OPERATIVE SOCIETY OF INDUSTRY LTD IN COMMEMORATION OF THE SOCIETY'S JUBILEE NOVEMBER 7TH 1900."

Brass rings for chained cups and remnants of brass taps are present on the east and west faces, positioned above the bowls. The fountain is surrounded by a tarmac path, with an iron drain cover on each side of the base. The south cover is made of cast iron and features holes, while the east and west gratings are smaller. A large manhole on the north side provides access to the underground structure. This fountain is part of the Hare Hills Park development, which followed the lease of the Newall family home to Littleborough Urban District Council in 1900.
