Description
The Railway Viaduct, built in 1839 for the Manchester Leeds Railway Company, is an important landmark in Littleborough. Designed by engineer George Stephenson, it features rock-faced stone construction with a total of six elliptical arches. The northernmost arch is skew and has arched walkways on either side. Each arch includes keystones and rusticated voussoirs, supported by piers with impost blocks. One of the arches has been bricked up in the 20th century. Above the arches, there is a coped parapet over a continuous band, which has been slightly altered on the west side due to the station platform. The viaduct also has battered terminating piers.
