Description

This is a late 18th-century town house, rebuilt in 1798 for William and Betty Newall, with later additions to the rear in 1915. It’s constructed of ashlar stone with a slate roof. The house has a double-pile plan, meaning two rooms deep, and a symmetrical facade of five bays across two storeys. A pediment sits above the central three bays, which project forward. The front features a projecting plinth, a band at first floor level, an eaves cornice with a blocking course, and a central doorway with six fielded panels, a radial fanlight above, a curved arch with a keystone, and an open pediment supported by three-quarter columns. There are four sash windows on the ground floor and five on the first floor, all with sashes. The central first-floor window has an eared architrave and keystone. The large pediment above the central bays contains a circular window. The roof is hipped, with chimney stacks on the side walls. A stair window with a rounded top is located on the left return above a door with a moulded surround. The 1915 additions include a two-storey bow window. Original Regency-style fireplaces and other interior features remain.
