Description

Broad Shaw Farmhouse and the adjoining barn date back to 1651, as indicated by the inscription "GWAW 1651 ICIW" on the door lintel. The building is constructed from hammer-dressed stone and features a graduated stone slate roof. It has a 2-unit plan with three bays and two storeys, along with a rear wing that includes the barn. The structure has quoins and a door to the left, which is obscured by a brick addition. This door has a dated lintel, a chamfered surround, and an obtuse-angled head with recessed spandrels.

The farmhouse features five and four-light double-chamfered mullion windows, with two mullions removed from the former and a hoodmould on the latter. The first floor has similar windows with six, three, and three lights, each having one or two missing mullions. The building also has a kneeler and gable chimney stacks, with the right stack projecting. An arched light on the rear left, possibly a fire window, is inscribed with the letters G, C, and W. Other windows in the gables and rear have two or three lights.

The rear wing, which was once a separate dwelling, has various chamfered mullion windows, mostly altered, on both the front and rear. The barn features a round-headed cart entry. Inside the farmhouse, there are chamfered floor beams and a moulded fire surround with an obtuse-angled lintel in the parlour. The rear wing contains an 18th-century fireplace and a timber-framed crosswall. The barn has inclined strut roof trusses, one of which is diagonally braced, suggesting that it was originally a timber-framed structure.
