Description
Garside Farmhouse is a house dating from 1697, as indicated by the inscription "WMG: 1697" on the porch lintel, although it has undergone significant 20th-century alterations. The building is constructed of rendered stone and features a 20th-century tiled roof. It is a long, two-storey structure that retains a notable single-storey porch. The porch is castellated and includes large corner ball finials, an unusual gargoyle, a cornice band, and a moulded door surround with a segmental-arched dated lintel. Internally, the porch has seats equipped with circular squints. To the left of the porch, there is a four-light double-chamfered mullion window, although two of the mullions have been removed, and it features a hoodmould. The rest of the house has adopted the character of 20th-century materials and alterations. Inside, there are hewn beams. The historical context of the farmhouse is noted in H. Fishwick's "History of Rochdale," published in 1889.
