Description

Saint Paul's Methodist Chapel and Sunday School is a chapel and Sunday school built in 1863 by James Simpson, with the Sunday school added in 1871 by John Wild of Oldham. The building is constructed of ashlar stone and features a slate roof. It has a three-sided gallery plan with five by six bays and two storeys. The Sunday school is attached at the rear and consists of four by seven bays and two storeys.

The chapel has a gable pediment with a modillion cornice and a central oculus adorned with volute decoration. Rusticated corner pilasters enhance its appearance. The central porch features corner antae and columns in antis that support a bold entablature, with double panelled doors and an overlight. The outer sash windows are framed with raised segment-headed surrounds, keystones, and light volute decoration. The round-arched first-floor sash windows have marginal glazing bars and are set into a continuous sill band, with pilasters and a string course above. The side windows are similar but less ornate.

The Sunday school has a pediment over the central three bays, which are slightly advanced, and a bracketed eaves cornice. Doors in the extreme bays are topped with fanlights, pilaster surrounds, and dropped keystones. The ground floor features segment-headed windows, while the first floor has round-arched windows with stone sills and dropped keystones. The central three first-floor windows have open pediments, and the tympanum includes an oculus and a garland.

There are cast-iron railings and gates surrounding the front enclosure. A 20th-century addition is located at the rear. Inside, the chapel features a panelled gallery parapet supported by cast-iron columns, an arched organ loft, and a panelled ceiling. The enriched plaster frieze includes shell motifs.
