Description
The Church of St. Paul is a Grade II listed building constructed between 1884 and 1889 by architect H. Cockburn. It is built from rock-faced stone and features a slate roof. The church has a nave with a clerestory and aisles, along with a north-west steeple. The chancel is accompanied by a side chapel, organ chamber, and vestry, all designed in the Gothic revival style.
The church consists of a 5-bay nave and aisles, characterized by a projecting plinth, a sill band, and corbelled eaves at the clerestory level. Each bay is supported by a weathered buttress and features two cusped lancet window openings in the aisle, as well as two 2-light clerestory windows, all adorned with hoodmoulds. The side chapel and organ chamber have twin gables, while the gables are coped with kneelers and finials. The east and west windows are 5-light with geometrical tracery.
The imposing tower has arched entrances on the north and west sides, with lancet and round openings on the upper levels. Each face of the tower includes two 2-light transomed belfry openings, an octagonal stair turret in one corner, and a broach spire with gabled lucarnes.
Inside, the church features a double-chamfered nave arcade supported by circular polished granite columns. The nave roof is scissor-braced and rests on columnar corbels, while the chancel roof is arch-braced. Notable interior elements include a stone font, timber screens and fittings, and stained glass, with the east window created by Hardman. Additionally, there is a baluster font dated 1754 and a wall tablet dedicated to Katherine Pickford from 1765.
