Description

The former Board School, now used as an education centre, was built around 1905. It is constructed of brick with stone and terracotta decorations, topped with a Welsh slate roof featuring ridge cresting. The building has two storeys and an attic, with a main range that has twelve windows arranged in a pattern of three- two- two- two- three, along with two parallel rear wings. The outer bays of the main range are set forward and topped with steep pavilion roofs.

The inner doorways and lower windows are round-arched, adorned with white terracotta banded voussoirs and stone sills. The doors and outer windows feature scrolled pedimented heads that interrupt the frieze above. The upper windows in the outer bays are also round-headed, with white terracotta keystones, moulded jambs, and a string course. These windows are separated by semi-octagonal pilasters that extend from corbels and continue across the parapet above.

A central round-arched dormer window sits between outer pinnacles, featuring a steep scrolled pedimented head and a pierced parapet. The central section is divided into three main bays by semi-octagonal pilasters above the ground floor. Each bay contains two squared lower windows and round-arched windows above, all with moulded terracotta architraves and white terracotta keystones.

Above the lower storey, there is a terracotta frieze with low relief strap-work, masks, and swags, along with the inscription "Board School". A moulded string course runs along the building. The central pedimented gable includes a terracotta frieze and an oculus set in a scrolled raised panel. Hipped roofed dormers are located on either side of the pediment, and two swept octagonal lanterns are positioned on the roof.

The return elevations each feature a three-window range on either side of the central pedimented gable, which housed the former entrances for boys, girls, and infants. The building has axial stacks and is enclosed by a brick wall in the forecourt on the north and west sides, complete with stone copings and banded stone piers. Cast-iron railings with arrow heads and scrollwork surround the property.
