Description
15 and 17 Sydenham Street are part of a block of 16 houses built in 1862 in Oldham. The buildings are constructed of brick with stone, polychrome brick, and terracotta dressings, arranged around a courtyard with long elevations facing east and west. There is a central arched entrance to the courtyard in both the north and south ranges. Each house is two storeys high, with a double-depth and single-unit width. The doorways feature steep arches with brick pilasters and red and white brick arched heads, leading to 4-panelled doors. The lower sash windows have semi-circular heads supported by a central column, while the upper windows are paired, with single windows above the doorways. All sashes have been renewed in their original openings, and new bay windows have been added at each end of the south elevation. A continuous sill band runs along the first floor, stepped on the north and south elevations. The polychrome brick frieze includes Greek key decoration and is bordered by string courses of moulded terracotta. The overhanging wood eaves cornice is supported by yellow brick console brackets, and there are stacks on each end wall. A datestone on the western elevation is inscribed "Albert Mount."
