Description
This is a pair of town houses, dating from around 1840, which have been altered and are now used as flats. They are situated on Moss Lane East in Moss Side, Manchester. The houses are constructed of white-painted stucco over brick, with a slate roof. They have a double-depth hall-and-adjoining plan, with each house single-fronted but featuring a set-back side wing and a rear extension.
The two-storey facades have two and two windows arranged in a 1:2:1 pattern, plus lower one-window side wings, presenting a symmetrical appearance. Features include a plinth, pilasters to slightly raised outer bays, and prominent wooden eaves. The ground floor has channelled rustication. Coupled recessed porches have pilastered surrounds with a frieze decorated with wreaths, a cornice, and a blocking course. The porches contain panelled inner doors with overlights. The ground-floor outer bays have tripartite windows, and all windows have moulded architraves. The windows are now fitted with top-hung casements, which have glazing bars designed to imitate sash windows. Gable chimneys are present, along with inserted skylights in the roof. Low side wings extend to the sides, each with one window per floor.
