Description
Whitworth Park Mansions is a terrace of four town houses, later converted into flats, built around 1840 and subsequently altered. The houses are constructed of white-painted stucco over brick, with a hipped slate roof. They follow a double-depth plan, with each house being double-fronted and incorporating two rear extensions. The design is three storeys high, with cellars beneath, and comprises three-bay sections repeated four times, demonstrating a mostly symmetrical layout. Sill bands and moulded wooden eaves are prominent features. Each house has slightly projected outer bays, with a central recessed porch. The porches feature Roman Doric columns, arranged distyle in antis, an entablature decorated with paterae on the frieze, and a panelled door with a pilastered surround and side lights, all beneath a rectangular overlight. The two houses on the left each feature canted bay windows flanking the entrance. The third house has a similar bay window to the right and a fifteen-pane sash window to the left, with a moulded architrave. The fourth house has two similar fifteen-pane sash windows. All houses have twelve-pane sash windows at the first floor and low six-pane sashes at the second floor, all with moulded architraves. The roofs no longer retain chimneys. The return walls have windows with similar moulded architraves and some are blind. The rear elevations have two two-storey lean-to back extensions, with altered window openings. The interior has not been inspected.
