Description

Westwood House is a block of six almshouses built in 1876, and slightly altered since. It is located on the south side of Raby Street, Moss Side, Manchester. The building is constructed of red brick with terracotta dressings, and has a 20th-century red pantiled roof. It follows an E-plan, consisting of a main range with three rear wings. The style is Flemish Gothic.

Westwood House is one-and-a-half storeys high, with five bays. The symmetrical facade has a wide centre flanked by projecting gabled bays. A double plinth features chamfered stone copings, and 1st-floor bands; the centre has stone panelling inscribed "IN MEMORIAM E.M.R. 1876", while the wings are enriched with terracotta panels. The gables have terracotta enrichment and stepped stone copings with kneelers and apex finials. Four tall clustered chimneys are visible on the front ridge, and one on each of the side wings.

The projecting gabled bays each feature flanking porches treated as buttresses, with 2-centred arched doorways and stepped surrounds. Ground floor windows are narrow single-lights with hoodmoulds, with matching windows at 1st floor, coupled under one hoodmould. The wider central section has pairs of similarly coupled windows at ground floor. A large half-dormer with a hipped roof and a five-light window (with a central blind light) is positioned at 1st floor, also with a hoodmould. The gable ends of the front range have similar fenestration, and small gabled porches are located at the junction with the side wings. The almshouses were erected by John Robinson of Atlas Works in memory of his sister, Edith Marianne Robinson. The interior was not inspected during listing.
