Description

This building, located at 4-14 King Street, is a commercial block with chambers above the shops, constructed around 1870-1880 and altered since. The facades are made of sandstone ashlar, while the rear is brick, and the roof is not visible. It has a large trapeziform plan on an island site and features a muted eclectic style with some Gothic elements. The structure stands four storeys high and consists of five bays arranged symmetrically. It has a cornice over the ground floor, sill-bands on the upper floors, and a modillioned cornice. The ground floor has 20th-century shop fronts, while the upper floors feature coupled windows that are round-headed, segmental-headed, and shouldered on successive levels, all with hoodmoulds except for the top floor. The central section is highlighted by distinct fenestration: a 2-light window in a round-headed arch with shafts, a keystone, and a prominent cornice on brackets at the first floor; shafts with carved capitals at the second floor; and a 3-light window at the third floor. Above, there is a tall pedimented dormer with a round-headed 2-light window. The north return has slightly projected alternate bays with round-headed 2-light windows at the first floor, but otherwise maintains similar fenestration. The interior has not been inspected.
