Description
Nos 54 and 56 King Street is a town house, now used as shops and an office, dating from around 1700 and significantly altered over time. The building features a stucco exterior on brick, with a roof that is not visible. It has a rectangular double-depth plan that runs at right angles to the street. The facade is three stories high with three windows, showcasing 20th-century shop fronts at the ground floor. The first and second floors have four-pane sashed windows, all with moulded architraves, flanked by 20th-century pseudo shutters, and the central windows feature 20th-century balconies. A bracketed cornice completes the facade.
The interior holds notable features, particularly in the front room on the first floor, which has fielded panelling, fluted Ionic pilasters, and plastered beams. The rear room displays late 17th-century or very early 18th-century moulded plaster emblems on the frieze, including a portcullis, running deer, and a flying boar, along with moulded plaster decoration on the soffits of the beams, featuring foliation and masks. There is also a closed string staircase with turned balusters and square newels. The building is connected by corridors to the first floor of No. 41 South King Street, which contains the entrance.
