Description
The Boardman Monument is a tomb chest located south of the apse at the east end of the Church of St Ann. It was likely created in the later 18th century and commemorates Joseph Boardman, who died in 1755, his wife Martha, who died in 1746, and 13 of their children, who passed away at various dates between 1722 and 1753. The monument is made of sandstone and features raised side and end panels, as well as a shouldered lid with a moulded edge. At the head of the tomb chest, there is a six-line inscription, followed by inscriptions arranged in three vertical columns. The first column lists names, the second indicates "Son" or "Dau," and the third provides dates. These columns are separated by double-scored brackets, with the word "their" between the first pair and "bur.d" between the second. No ages are provided for the individuals listed. The surface of the monument is slightly flaked, and there is a later inscription of the figure "439" in the bottom right-hand corner.
