Description

The Allen monument is a tomb chest located south of the apse at the east end of the Church of St Ann, dating from 1773. It commemorates Joseph Allen, who died in 1769, his wife Alice, who died in 1742, and their children: John, who died in 1726 at the age of 2; Sam, who died in 1736 at the age of 6; John, who died in 1754 at the age of 22; Joseph, who died in 1756 at the age of 29; Thomas, who died in 1758 at the age of 23; and Alice, who died in 1759 at the age of 21. The monument is made of sandstone and features raised fielded panels on the sides and ends, with a plain lid. The lid has the names and dates inscribed in a vertical list, followed by the inscription: "As a Testimony of Duty / And Affection to his Honoured Parents / And of Love to his Brothers & Sister / Will.m Allen of Davy-Hulme / Erected this Tomb 1773".
