Description
Eagle House is an insurance office built in 1911 by Charles Heathcote and Sons, located on Cross Street in Manchester. The building is constructed of sandstone ashlar and features a slate roof. It has a trapeziform plan on an island site and is designed in the Baroque style. The structure stands three storeys high with an attic and consists of five bays, plus one bay at the curved corners, arranged symmetrically.
The ground floor showcases banded rustication and includes a central round-headed entrance archway with a banded cavetto surround and a triple keystone, flanked by decorative cartouches. There are square-headed doorways in the chamfered corners, each with keystones, and large rectangular shop windows separated by banded piers. The upper floors are marked by giant fluted Ionic pilasters, a pulvinated frieze, and a prominent modillioned cornice. The mansard roof features open-pedimented attic dormers.
On the upper floors, the central feature windows are set under semi-circular open pediments topped with an eagle. The lower window has an elaborate open-pedimented architrave, while the upper round-headed window includes radiating glazing bars and a scrolled keystone. The first floor has large 2-light casement windows with moulded architraves and emphatic triple keystones, while the second floor features 2-light sash windows with blocked colonnettes. The corners of the building are adorned with curved 2-light windows with bold architraves, and between the floors are lettered shields supported by putti. The building is topped with tall banded chimneys. The returned ends are styled similarly but are finished with semi-circular pediments containing 4-light windows. The interior has not been inspected.
