Description
The tower of the Church of St Bartholomew is a detached structure built between 1869 and 1870 by architects Cunliffe and Freeman. It was repaired in 1991 and is constructed from rock-faced stone with ashlar dressings. The tower features setback buttresses that end in gabled niches at the lower part. It has 2-light plate tracery windows on the south and east sides. A southeast stair turret clasps the corner and has a chamfered upper section that projects above the tower, resembling a pinnacle. The upper part of the tower includes two string courses. There are paired bell openings with 2 lights between clasping pilasters, a corbel table above the openings, a cornice, and an embattled parapet. The main part of the church, built in the 19th century, was almost completely destroyed by fire in 1990 and was rebuilt, with the new church being consecrated in 1995.
