Description
The Church of St John the Evangelist is a church built between 1858 and 1859 by G. Shaw. It is constructed from rock-faced stone with ashlar dressings and features slate roofs. The church comprises a nave, chancel, and a north vestry. The six-bay nave is wide with low walls and has two-light traceried windows situated between weathered buttresses. There is a south gabled porch that includes a segmental-pointed entrance and a light above it. The west end features a three-light window with a pentangle in a roundel and two trefoil-headed windows, along with two small buttresses and a bell cote on the gable. The chancel is supported by diagonal buttresses and has a three-light east window. On the south side, there is a window with trefoil-headed lights and trefoils above, as well as a Y-tracery window flanking the entrance with a shouldered lintel. The north lean-to vestry contains triple pointed lights and an entrance, with a brick stack on a stone base.
Inside, the roof has a braced collar structure with pendants and wind braces. The west gallery was likely moved forward during late 20th-century alterations to create vestries and a meeting room. The chancel features an arch-braced roof, wainscotting, and a traceried reredos. There is 19th-century stained glass, which is particularly notable in the east and south windows.
