Description

The property consists of a former gatehouse to Lostock Hall, which has since been demolished, and a cottage range located to the rear. The gatehouse dates to 1590, while the cottage was added in the 18th century (1810). The gatehouse is constructed from coursed and squared stone with a slate roof. The three-storey gatehouse features a wide central segmental arch, originally open but now infilled with a modern doorway; it has sash windows on either side. The upper floors feature paired mullioned and transomed windows, with an eight-light example on the uppermost floor displaying a coat of arms and the date. The facade is articulated by coupled columns: Tuscan order on the ground floor, Ionic above, and Corinthian on the third storey. Moulded stone cornices, string courses, and a scalloped parapet are also present, along with a gable end stack. The cottage range, forming a rear wing, is two storeys high with a three-window facade. The cottage's sash windows and doorway are replacements within original openings, and it has two axial stacks. The interior of the gatehouse has not been inspected. The site of the medieval Lostock Hall has been demolished and is now occupied by a factory.
