Description

This is a terrace of five houses located on Fifth Street, Bazley Street, Bolton, dating to approximately 1830. Built as part of the model village of Barrow Bridge, established around 1831 by Robert Gardner to serve the nearby Dean Mills complex, the terrace was designed to provide housing for mill workers. The houses are constructed of coursed and squared stone, with a slate roof.

The front elevation faces east and presents a ten-window range. The houses are double-pile planned, with each house being a single unit. The principal doorways are distinguished by moulded architraves and entablature hood mouldings. Most windows have been renewed but retain the original flat-arched openings. Inserted windows are present towards the centre of the terrace. The westernmost house (number 51) incorporates a basement and a ground-floor stone terrace with cast-iron railings. Most chimneys have been removed. The rear of the terrace rises due to the steeply sloping site, resulting in three and four-storey sections.

The interior of the houses has not been inspected.
