Description

Brook Mill, originally known as No. 3 Twist Mill, is a cotton twist mill that dates back to 1887 and was part of a larger cotton works. It is currently used for multiple industrial purposes. The building is constructed of brick with rusticated stone basement end bands and features a multi-ridge slate roof, with an internal structure made of cast iron, steel, and concrete.

The exterior of the mill stands five storeys tall and consists of 14 by 6 bays. A stair tower is recessed in the center of the return wall, featuring an off-set gabled porch and a pedimented terracotta parapet with a clock. The windows on the lower storeys have flat heads, while those above are segmentally arched and recessed between pilasters. There is a cornice over the third storey, and a loading bay is located to the left on the long north elevation, which is also dated 1887. An engine house projects from the northwest angle, consisting of two engine houses that form an L-shaped projection, with a boiler house adjoining to the west.

Historically, the mill was built as a twist mill in 1871 but was rebuilt in 1887. It primarily functioned for finishing and winding until 1903, after which it carried out twisting and winding operations transferred from the 1881 mill. To the west of the mill, there is a two-storey brick building that may have originally served as a warehouse or workshop. Brook Mill is part of a significant textile-working site established by the Chadwicks after 1820 on a previously developed site, which at its peak included five mills and a bleaching and dyeing works, along with an associated planned community. The mills were dedicated to smallwear weaving, sewing-cotton manufacture, twist bleaching, and dyeing. The twist mill showcases a distinctive architectural style and contributes to a strong visual grouping of mills in this prominent valley location.
