Description

This building is probably originally a cotton mill, later used as a canteen for the Eagley Mills complex and as a leather goods works. It has recently been reported as having residential use. The core of the building largely dates to the late 18th century, with extensions added in 1926. The original section is constructed of coursed and squared watershot stone, with a hipped slate roof. The later additions are brick with rock-faced stone bands.

The original building is two storeys high to the south and three storeys high to the north, with a 9x2 bay layout. It has wide sash windows with small panes and flat heads. A cast-iron external staircase is attached to the third bay. A single-storey gabled projection against the west wall was once a boiler house. No other traces of a power system remain, and the original use of the mill is unclear. The extension is two to three storeys high, with three bays, and includes an entrance and staircase providing access to the working floors. A central pediment sits above the parapet over the entrance.

The original interior construction appears to have comprised unsupported lateral timber beams. These have been replaced or strengthened on the lower storeys by steel joists carried on cast-iron columns.

Documentary evidence suggests a mill existed on the Eagley Mills site by 1816. In 1820, James and Robert Chadwick established a tape-weaving business on the site, also making sewing cotton, cards, and laces. At this time, the original building would have been a small part of a much larger industrial site, reflected in its later use as a canteen.
