Description
Christ Church is a parish church built in 1838, with a chancel added in 1882 by W. Owen. The church features a red brick nave constructed in Flemish bond and a brown brick chancel in English bond, both topped with slate roofs. The nave has five bays designed in a lancet style, while the chancel is narrower and less lofty, with a vestry on the south side and an organ chamber on the north.
The main entrance to the nave has Gothic arched gables flanked by treble shafts with rings, topped by a steeply angled triangular panel that encloses a small lancet window. Buttresses with pilasters and steeply weathered caps flank the entrance. The nave's lancet windows have stone sills and heads, with a former moulded sill band and a string course that rises over the window heads. The windows feature leaded light glazing with stained glass in the gables of both the nave and chancel.
Additional architectural details include a bracketed eaves cornice with a lead gutter, gable copings, and a bell-cote with mouldings at the sill and head that rises above the apex. The nave has a lead ridge, while the chancel has a tile ridge.
Inside, the altar has been moved forward, and the entire chancel is now used for the choir. A small marble reredos with inset panels and four gold angels remains in place. The chancel features two hammer beam trusses with collars, short king posts, shallow curved beams, trefoil infilling, exposed purlins, and rafters, along with a boarded soffit. The nave has kingpost trusses with curved braces below the tie beams, gothic arcade infilling, exposed purlins, and a plastered soffit. There are also brass monuments dedicated to a former Vicar and Church Warden.
