Description
The Close is a former school that has been converted into a dwelling, built in 1833. The building is constructed of rendered red brick and features a slate roof. It stands three storeys high and has two bays. The facade, rear, and west gable have a coursed stucco finish. The entrance has a four-panel door with bolection moulded lower panels and glazed upper panels, which is fronted by a later porch. The facade includes recessed sash windows with single glazing bars, although some have been altered. The eaves are plain and coupled with bracketted supports, and there is a wooden fascia and lead gutter. The roof is hipped, with lead hips and ridge. The Close was built by James Cropper, a pioneer of education from Lancashire.
