Description
Vigo House, located at Dial Street, is an early 19th-century building that stands on the site where Anna Laetitia Aikin, later known as Mrs. Barbauld, the poetess, lived from 1758 to 1774. A tablet on the cast iron gateway commemorates this history and was erected in 1911. The house is two storeys tall, constructed of brick with a slate roof, and features a stone parapet and cornice.
The central entrance is highlighted by a porch supported by detached Roman Doric columns and a cornice, leading to a six-panel door topped by a round-arched fanlight with glazing bars. The windows are 12 and 9-paned, with restored casements that resemble sash windows, flat brick heads, and stone sills. The building is dated 1817 and is part of a group that includes Nos 2 to 6 (even), the Cross Keys Public House at Nos 80 to 84 (even), the Roman Catholic Church of St Mary, the Trustee Savings Bank, and No 95 on Buttermarket Street.
