Description

The former tide dock of the Bridgewater Canal and the lock to the north date from around 1772. It is constructed from sandstone blocks, with some repairs made using brick and concrete. The dock has a trapezoidal opening that originally led into the River Mersey at its southern end, but it now opens into the Manchester Ship Canal. The lock, which connected to the series of locks at the start of the canal, is designed with rebates for two sets of gates. These elements are the only remaining features from the former Runcorn terminus of the Bridgewater Canal.
