Description
The headstone of William Huggins is located in the churchyard of St. James and is dated 1884. It features a pointed arched slab made of pink sandstone, with a carved posy of flowers above the inscription. The inscription includes details about William Huggins, described as an historic and animal painter of acknowledged eminence, noted for being a just and compassionate man who would neither tread on a worm nor cringe to an emperor. The stone also commemorates his brother Samuel, an architectural historian, and his sister Hannah. William Huggins spent the later part of his life at Rock House in Christleton, where he reportedly kept wild animals in the cellars to draw from life.
