Description
The lych gate to St. James's Churchyard was built around 1885 by William Butterfield in memory of Harriet Garnett. It features a combination of ashlar red sandstone and timber framing, topped with a Welsh slate roof and a red tile ridge. The structure has a rectangular plan with gabled stone side walls that are coped and finialled, and these walls include slight buttresses and two trefoil-headed openings. The roof is supported by three arch-braced timber trusses that spring from stone corbels, with the central truss displaying a carved memorial inscription. The lych gate also includes simple yet substantial wooden gates that are fitted with iron strap hinges.
