Description

Eccleston Hill is a large house built in a free Jacobean style between 1881 and 1882 by John Douglas for the 1st Duke of Westminster, intended as a residence for his secretary, who was also his nephew. The building has two storeys and attics, constructed from stone-dressed red brick with blue diapering, and features complex hipped and gabled red tile roofs along with shaped brick chimneys. The north entrance front includes a gabled oak-framed porch and stone mullioned windows with metal casements, although most of the leaded glazing has been removed. The outer door is arched, framed, and panelled in oak, leading to a glazed oak inner door.

Attached to the southeast is a timber conservatory with an octagonal lantern and some leaded and small-pane glazing, as well as a long fruit-tree wall along the north side of the garden. There is also a single-storey stable wing with a covered carriage entrance attached to the northeast. Inside, the house features an oak-panelled hall with a robust open-well staircase. The drawing room includes an ornate plaster frieze, cornice, and fireplace, while the dining room and study feature plaster wainscot, and the study has a delph rail.
