Description
The tombchest of William Briscoe, who died in 1723, is located 4 meters west of the priest's door to St Michael's Church in Shotwick. This tombchest is made of buff sandstone and is rectangular in shape, resting on a chamfered plinth. It features two fielded panels on the long sides and one on the short sides. The top slab has a cyma-moulded cornice and is inscribed with a long text in a semi-circular headed border, commemorating William Briscoe, his wife, brother, and sister-in-law, all in a good serifed script. The design suggests that, aside from the top slab, the rest of the tombchest may date to around 1764.
