Description

Woodbine Cottage is a former farmhouse that has been converted into a house. It has origins dating back to the 16th century or earlier, with a late 17th-century exterior, and was remodeled with an upper storey raised in the early to mid-19th century. The building features washed English bond orange brick on a stone plinth, with cob walling present internally. The roof is made of Welsh slate and has two gable brick chimneys.

The cottage has a two-room plan and a symmetrical two-storey front with three bays. A broad dentil brick band runs along the first floor, topped by a dentil cornice. The end bays have deep 12-pane sash windows below and horned sashes above. The central bay features a trellis porch in front of a moulded surround that leads to a partly glazed 20th-century door. The right end has a small-pane iron casement window with intersecting tracery.

Inside, the ground storey retains cob walling from the original one-storey house. Heavy ceiling beams rest on depressions in the rear wall plate and are hung from the window lintel at the front. There are some three-board and two-panelled doors with fielded panels, along with unusual brass spring latches found upstairs. A simple dog-leg staircase with plain balusters leads to the upper level.

Woodbine Cottage is perhaps the unique example of cob walling surviving in Cheshire.
