Description
The Old School House is a schoolhouse built in 1645 and 1710, which has been converted into a cottage. It features brown brickwork in English garden wall bond and a graded stone-slate roof. The building is 1½ storeys high with two symmetrical windows. The entrance door consists of six raised and fielded panels. The original wooden 3-light leaded casements have been replaced, and there is a plain three-course band at the first floor level. Above the doorway, there is a stone inscription that reads "Deo et Ecclesiae hanc domunculum in usum scholae humilime dedicat Ri: Comberbach 1710 postea datavit 1645," with the cill of the dedication stone marked "RESTAURATA 1883." The left gable end has a horizontally sliding sash window in the lower storey and two leaded windows in the upper storey. A mid-20th century oriel window has been inserted in the right gable. The original square belfry above the right gable has been replaced, and there is a rendered chimney on the left gable. The interior has been altered during the conversion but was not inspected. The building is part of an attractive group surrounding the forecourt of the churchyard.
