Description
The arch from St Michael's Church is a Grade II listed structure, believed to date from the late 12th century. It is made of red sandstone and is in a badly eroded condition. The arch was removed from the church, which is now the Heritage Centre on Bridge Street and Row in Chester, likely during its major rebuilding by James Harrison around 1849-50.
The main feature is a round archway that has a hollow chamfer and an eroded arris-mould on its eastern face. It is topped with a gabled hoodmould and has buttresses at both the south-east and north-east corners. Additionally, there is a small pointed archway to the north, which may have originated from a different source. This smaller archway has one stone forming each side, with the northern stone broken in two. It features a recessed chamfer on the western face and an eroded square rebate on the eastern side.
